May 2025 · Where it started

We won first place at ISEF.

Our PT150 project won first place in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at the 2025 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. We wanted to keep working on ALS after the fair, so that summer we started ALS Forward. The video is from the awards ceremony.

August 2026 · Our white paper

The year before a diagnosis.

The next thing we worked on was the wait for a diagnosis. In the United States, people with ALS wait ten to sixteen months between their first symptom and a diagnosis, and median survival is two to five years. Our white paper looks at why the wait is so long and what local groups can do to shorten it.

10–16 mo
from first ALS symptom to a confirmed diagnosis in the United States.
60%
already fail ALS clinical trial criteria on the day they are diagnosed.
$47,000
in medical costs during the first year after diagnosis, before anything a family pays out of pocket.

September 2026 · Interview

Thirteen years inside ALS research.

Recorded over a video call in September 2026.

In September we called the institute our donations go to. Alan Premasiri runs clinical research operations there. We asked him what has changed since he started in 2013, and what the ALS community needs from people who do not work in a lab.

Eight questions, 27:49.
